Caesalpiniaceae Peltogyne, aka Amarante (F), Purpleheart (Guyana), Guarabu, Ipe or pau roxo (Br). Provenance: Panama, Guyana, Surinam, Brazil, Colombia. Casks 5 to 15 metres. Trunk diameter 40 to 100 cm. Density 0.87 g/cm3. The violet color (which appears when drying) is more or less dark depending on the subject, often moiré. Quite hard, its grain is homogeneous. It is quite handy. It has been used in France since the 18th century in marquetry and parquet floors, furniture, decoration, filming (e.g. pool cue).
